The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is targeting December 2026 to complete Phase II of Metro Line 9, extending the corridor from Kashigaon to Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium in Mira-Bhayandar. The extension is expected to improve metro connectivity for residents in the rapidly growing suburban region and strengthen links with Mumbai’s wider metro network.
The second phase will add four stations: Sai Baba Nagar, Meditya Nagar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Garden and Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium. Once civil construction and systems installation are completed, MMRDA plans to invite the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) to inspect the corridor. Passenger services will commence only after the required safety certification is granted.
Metro Line 9 is an extension of Metro Line 7, which connects Dahisar East with Gundavali in Andheri East. The first phase of Line 9, connecting Dahisar East to Kashigaon, commenced operations in April 2026, establishing a metro link between Mira-Bhayandar and the existing suburban metro network.
The upcoming extension is expected to provide commuters with an alternative to road travel along the Western Express Highway and the crowded Western Railway suburban network. According to project estimates, the corridor could reduce travel time by 50% to 75%, depending on traffic conditions and the existing mode of transport.
The new stations are expected to improve access to residential areas in Mira-Bhayandar and facilitate daily travel to employment centres across Mumbai. The additional connectivity could also help ease pressure on major arterial roads, particularly during peak commuting hours.
However, the extent of congestion relief will depend on passenger adoption, train frequency and the efficiency of interchange facilities connecting Metro Line 9 with Metro Line 7 and other transport services. The planned December completion remains subject to construction readiness, safety inspections and the necessary approvals before passenger operations can begin.
