Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is moving forward with its ambitious plan to establish a ropeway cable-car system connecting Sarasbaug and Parvati. The initiative was announced by Shrinath Bhimale, chairperson of the PMC standing committee, during the presentation of the civic budget for the fiscal year 2026-27. To facilitate this project, PMC has appointed a project management consultant tasked with conducting a comprehensive feasibility study and developing preliminary designs for the cable car system.
According to civic officials, the consultant’s forthcoming report is expected to provide crucial insights into the design and construction of the ropeway. The PMC intends to implement this project through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, actively seeking funding options to support its development. The primary goal of the ropeway is to enhance accessibility between the two popular locations, Sarasbaug and Parvati.
The proposed ropeway is designed to commence and conclude at a parking area owned by PMC, situated near Sarasbaug and Peshwe Adventure Park. In recent months, Bhimale has convened several review meetings to expedite the planning process, ensuring that all technical considerations are thoroughly evaluated. This is not the first time a ropeway has been proposed for this route; a similar initiative was introduced in 1994 but faced significant opposition due to design and location disputes, particularly from BJP-Shiv Sena members and some Congress corporators. Now, with the BJP-led administration at the helm, the project is being revived.
As part of the planning phase, PMC has initiated the tendering process to select a consultant for both pre- and post-tender activities. Officials estimate that it will take a few months to complete the necessary formalities. While the exact financial outlay for the project remains undetermined, preliminary estimates suggest a budget of approximately Rs 150 crore.
Bhimale emphasized that the project aims not only to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the Sarasbaug and Parvati Hill areas but also to improve accessibility for visitors. Preliminary discussions with various stakeholders have already taken place, and PMC is exploring diverse financial avenues to ensure the project’s success without direct expenditure from the municipal budget. In addition to the ropeway, PMC is also planning to construct a skywalk glass bridge in the Sarasbaug vicinity, marking a significant first for the city.
