The completion deadline for Mumbai’s Sewri-Worli connector, which will link the Coastal Road with the Atal Setu, has been extended to May 31, 2027, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said during a review meeting on infrastructure projects.

The 4.5-kilometre Sewri-Worli connector is being developed to improve east-west connectivity between Worli and Sewri. The project will provide a direct link between the Coastal Road and the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Trans Harbour Link, or Atal Setu.

The project was originally scheduled for completion by September 2026. However, construction delays and the complexity of work around the railway tracks have pushed the deadline further.

A senior MMRDA official said that the height of the bridge piers and the double-decker configuration have created significant challenges in launching the girders, particularly at locations near Parel and Sewri, where construction has to be carried out while traffic continues on the roads below.

A major component of the project involves construction over the railway tracks near Prabhadevi and Parel stations. The new structure will also replace the old Elphinstone Bridge, which was dismantled after more than a century of service.

The railway portion of the project is being undertaken by MahaRail. Officials are preparing to launch the girders over the railway tracks in November 2026. The prefabricated girders will first be assembled at the site before being positioned over the tracks.

The 112-year-old bridge was dismantled by MRIDC in April 2026, about a month later than originally scheduled. The authority is targeting completion of its portion by the end of 2026.

Following completion of the railway-related works, MMRDA will undertake the remaining connecting portions between the railway bridge and the other sections of the Sewri-Worli connector.

With these works still pending, the entire project is now expected to be completed by May 31, 2027.
