One day a snake somehow sneaked into one of the almirahs of the Power Ministry which contained some important files relating to the power sector. As efforts to shoo it away failed, staff in the ministry became a little worried. Their problems only compounded when the PMO asked for some file which was kept in the same almirah. With all their efforts to drive the snake away failing, Power Ministry officials approached the fire brigade which directed them to the Home Ministry as they felt it was a matter of internal security. When they approached the Home Ministry, “Get the clearance from MoEF as it comes under its purview,” came the reply from the ministry. “If the snake is more than two feet long you have to take the clearance of the Environment Ministry. Otherwise the Delhi state environment ministry’s permission is enough,” a further clarification came from the Home Ministry.

Now the Power Ministry officials became very nervous as they felt if the snake was not rescued immediately it could become an election issue with right wing parties accusing the ruling party of disrespecting the Hindu God. On the other hand, if the snake dies of suffocation inside the almirah animal rights groups like PETA could start protesting on the streets. The Power Ministry officials found themselves in a piquant position with no solution in the offing. As a last resort one official rang up the PM and narrated the entire story and sought his intervention. “First, you take permission from Madam and then come to me” came the reply from the other side. The official was happy – at least he heard the PM speaking!
Suddenly, one of the officials noticed a snake charmer playing a pungi to hypnotise the snake on the footpath. Immediately, he rushed to that snake charmer and told his serpentine problem to him. The snake charmer came with his ‘equipment’ and started playing in front of the almirah. Slowly, to everyone’s surprise, the snake came out of its hiding and went inside the snake charmer’s basket. Relieved, the Power Ministry staff spontaneously handed over Rs.100 to the snake charmer and thanked him profusely. The nation was saved from an impending power crisis and that too by a snake charmer!
