Thermal power capacity addition during the first half of the current fiscal has fallen far short of the target. While target for the first half of the year was 7519.30 MW, the country could only achieve 4,501 MW during the period. Out of this 3,380 MW was commissioned by the private sector while the balance was added in the state sector.

Thermal power sector accounts for more than 50% of the power generating capacity in the country and Power Ministry is making every effort to meet the target for the year. It should be noted that targets for the coming quarters pegged at 4,085 MW and 3,630 MW in the third and fourth quarter respectively. A total of 3305 MW is programmed for commissioning by the private sector followed by 2760 MW by the central sector. Moreover, projects with total capacity of 1650 MW are proposed to be developed by the state sector.
