Vikram Solar’s subsidiary, VSL PowerHive, is planning to establish a battery energy storage system (BESS) assembly plant at Oragadam on the outskirts of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, to strengthen domestic energy storage manufacturing and support the integration of renewable energy into the power grid.
The proposed facility will span 1.65 lakh square feet and is expected to be inaugurated in January 2027, with commercial operations scheduled to begin in April 2027. The plant will initially have an annual production capacity of 7.5 GWh, which can be expanded to 15 GWh in subsequent phases.
The project forms part of Vikram Solar’s broader strategy to develop 30 GWh of battery manufacturing capacity by 2030, positioning the company to expand its presence across India’s clean energy value chain.
The Oragadam facility will assemble lithium iron phosphate (LFP)-based battery storage systems for utility-scale projects as well as commercial and industrial applications. Its planned product portfolio includes liquid-cooled battery storage containers, specialised battery cabinets and integrated energy storage solutions designed to complement renewable energy installations.
As part of its long-term expansion strategy, VSL PowerHive also plans to initiate a 7.5 GWh battery cell manufacturing programme from 2028, moving beyond assembly towards a more integrated manufacturing ecosystem. The company has also begun filing patents for indigenous battery technologies to strengthen its domestic technology capabilities.
Vikram Solar Chairman and Managing Director Gyanesh Chaudhary said energy storage would play a critical role in achieving India’s clean energy targets. He described the initiative as a strategic expansion into the energy storage segment, extending the company’s presence beyond power generation.
