Project Contracts

In the first half of FY25, India witnessed a surge in project investment activities. According to Projects Today, a total of 3,330 contracts worth Rs 4.61 lakh crore were awarded during this period. These contracts spanned both domestic and international projects, with 2,215 companies securing contracts across various sectors, including infrastructure, power distribution, real estate, and more.

Among the contracts, 119 were mega-sized, each valued at Rs 1,000 crore or more, with a collective worth of Rs 2.78 lakh crore. Maharashtra led the charge in terms of contract finalisation, with Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) among the biggest contract awarders. MSRDC alone awarded contracts worth Rs 83,580 crore, while MMRDA followed with Rs 18,354 crore. The projects awarded ranged from infrastructure development to power distribution and public services.

The Infrastructure sector had a lion’s share in the total contracts awarded. A total of 2,738 contracts worth Rs 3.36 lakh crore were finalised in this sector, accounting for 73 percent of the total value of contracts awarded in H1-Y25. The Roadways sector was a major focus, with 875 contracts worth Rs 1.59 lakh crore awarded, representing over one-third of the total infrastructure projects. MSRDC awarded several major contracts, including one to Afcons Infrastructure worth Rs 2,849 crore for the Nagpur-Gondia Super Communication Expressway. Meanwhile, Navayuga Engineering received multiple contracts from both MSRDC and MMRDA for road development and urban connectivity projects.

The Power Distribution sector also saw significant investment, with 265 new contracts worth Rs 67,246 crore awarded in H1-FY25. The increased activities reflect state government agencies’ focus on modernizing the power infrastructure, particularly through the deployment of advanced metering systems. Genus Power Infrastructures emerged as a key player, securing contracts worth over Rs 8,000 crore for providing advanced metering services.

The Railways sector received a considerable boost with 159 contracts valued at Rs 27,404 crore. These contracts are aimed at expanding and modernizing rail infrastructure across the country. Notable projects included Gawar Construction’s contract for the Mumbai Metro Line 12 and Larsen & Toubro’s contract for the Agra Metro Line. These projects underscore the government’s commitment to improving public transportation and connectivity in urban areas.

Real Estate, another key sector, saw 329 contracts awarded, with a total value of Rs 27,082 crore. One of the most prominent contracts in this sector was awarded to NBCC (India) by the Srinagar Development Authority for the development of a satellite township in Srinagar, worth Rs 15,000 crore.

Water and Sewage infrastructure also featured prominently in H1 FY25. A total of 333 contracts worth Rs 16,541 crore were awarded in the Water & Sewerage Pipeline & Distribution sector. Megha Engineering & Infrastructures was awarded a significant contract by Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation for constructing an automated pressurized pipe distribution network system.

Community Services sector also saw substantial investment, with 455 contracts worth Rs 11,499 crore awarded for public infrastructure projects. This includes projects related to water, sewage, and effluent treatment, which received investments totalling Rs 6,579 crore. Kalpataru Projects International, for example, secured a contract for a major water treatment plant in Punjab, reflecting ongoing efforts to improve public health infrastructure.

The Airports sector witnessed the award of 21 contracts worth Rs 3,438 crore. Ahluwalia Contracts (India) secured a significant contract from the Airports Authority of India for the development of the Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi.

In the Shipping sector, the Dredging Corporation of India was awarded a five-year contract worth Rs 2,016 crore for maintenance dredging in the Hooghly Estuary, crucial for maintaining the shipping channel to Haldia Dock.

The Electricity sector constituted for 12.56 percent of the total contracts awarded, with 186 contracts totalling Rs 57,975 crore. Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) emerged as a key player in the coal and thermal power sectors, securing contracts worth Rs 11,000 crore and Rs 6,100 crore, respectively.

In the Solar Power sector, the emphasis on renewable energy was evident with 93 contracts awarded, totalling Rs 9,010 crore. Zetwerk Manufacturing Businesses bagged a significant contract from NTPC for the production of solar photovoltaic modules. The Hydel Power sector also saw the finalisation of 19 contracts worth Rs 2,196 crore.

The Irrigation sector witnessed increased capex activities with 158 new contracts worth Rs 27,857 crore. The Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project Corporation awarded several major contracts to Megha Engineering & Infrastructure in Rajasthan.

The Manufacturing sector accounted for only 5.02 percent of the total contracts awarded in H1-FY25, with 197 contracts valued at Rs 23,193 crore. In the electronics sector, Bharat Electronics (BEL) secured a significant contract from Armoured Vehicles Nigam for the supply and installation of a Sighting and Fire Control System for the Indian Army’s BMP 2/2K Tanks.

In the Mining sector, 51 new contracts worth Rs 15,579 crore were awarded, focusing on coal and mineral exploration. In the Petroleum Oil & Gases sector, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders secured a contract from ONGC for the construction of wellhead platforms.

The Coal sector also saw significant activity, with Nilkanth Infra Mining securing a major contract from South Eastern Coalfields for coal handling and transport services. This project, valued at Rs 4,360 crore, is aimed at improving the efficiency of coal mining operations in Madhya Pradesh.

Overall, the first half of FY25 indicated improvement in project execution activities. The awarding of contracts worth Rs 4.61 lakh crore highlights the government’s focus on improving public infrastructure and enhancing connectivity across the country. From Roadways and Railways to Power Distribution and Public services, the emphasis on building a robust infrastructure foundation is evident.
