Coal India Ltd has dropped four washery projects for various reasons. As a result CIL will set up only 16 washeries at various subsidiaries instead of 20 coal washing projects as was decided previously.

CIL has dropped Sonepur Bazari Washery of Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL) and Wani Washery of Western Coalfields Ltd as the ash content of coal produced in these fields is less than 34% which is considered better quality coal. CIL has also proposed to drop Dhori and New Piperwar Washery of Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL) because of depletion of reserves from the linked mines.

Identification of land has been completed for the proposed Konar washery of CCL and land acquisition is expected to be completed by August 2014. The washery is expected to be commissioned by 2017-18. In case of Karo washery proposed to be set up by CCL, the land identified under forest land has been applied for forest clearance and the forest clearance for the same is expected by August 2014. Jagannath washery to be set up by Mahanadi Coalfields has been shifted to a new site near Bhuvaneshwari mine as the evacuation system was at longer-distance from the earlier selected site. The washery is expected to be commissioned in 2017-18. With the process of land identification complete and land acquisition in progress, MCL’s Lakhanpur washery, ECL’s Chitra washery and Baroud washery of SECL are expected to be commissioned by 2017-18.
