Talaipalli coal block may not be able to meet even the revised deadline of March 2015 as NTPC has not taken Mining Lease from Chattisgarh Government yet. The coal ministry had allocated the block to NTPC in 2006. In June last year, the Ministry of Coal had issued a show cause notice to NTPC asking reasons for inordinate delay in implementing the project. It may be remembered here that the coal production from Talaipalli coal block should have started by the end of 11th Five Year Plan itself. NTPC has been reportedly advised to apply for mining lease and to make statutory payment to State Government. It is only when NTPC obtains Mining Lease from State Government, the proposal for Mining Area Government Land will be cleared.

Talaipalli coal block will be used for captive consumption at 4000 MW Lara Supercritical Thermal Power Project, located at a distance of 60 km from the mine. It is an open cast cum underground mining project. The maximum capacity is expected to be 18MTPA for open cast mining and 0.72 MTPA for underground mining.
