Desalination Plant

VA TECH WABAG, a leading Indian multinational group specializing in water technology, has secured a Design, Build, Operate (DBO) order worth INR 4,400 Crores from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB). The order is for the construction of a 400 Million Litres per Day (MLD) Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) Desalination Project, to be executed in a joint venture with Metito Overseas Limited.

The project involves the design, engineering, procurement, construction, installation, testing and commissioning of the SWRO Desalination plant, including the associated sea water intake system. Upon completion, the project will be the largest desalination plant in the South East Asian region.

The desalination process will involve the use of Lamella Clarifiers, Dissolved Air Flotation System, Gravity Dual Media Filters, Reverse Osmosis and Re-mineralization to produce clean drinking water. The water will then be distributed by CMWSSB to the residents of South Chennai. The project will enhance water security for the city of Chennai through a stable source of drinking water in the form of desalination, making Chennai the Desalination Capital of India with almost 750 MLD of desalinated water to be produced along the coast of Chennai.

The project, which is being funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), will be executed over a period of 42 months followed by 20 years of Operation & Maintenance (O&M). WABAG will be responsible for about 70% of the water production through desalination in Chennai, making it a landmark project for the company.

Mr. Shailesh Kumar, CEO – India Cluster, expressed his excitement about this historical win and stated that this is the largest ever order for WABAG. He also highlighted that the company won this order against global competition, which reinforces their technological superiority and competitiveness in the global desalination space. This project is a testament to their leadership in the industry and puts WABAG on an inclined growth path for the future. Additionally, he mentioned that this landmark order coincides with WABAG being ranked 3rd globally among private water operators and among the Top 10 Desalination players globally by GWI. The project is not only a landmark project for WABAG, but also a testament to Tamilnadu’s commitment to building water security for Chennai and the state, making it a model for the whole country.
