Dr. G. L. Asawa_ProjectsMonitorDr. G.L. Asawa’s experience in teaching and research in the field of irrigation engineering and fluid mechanics inspired his three textbooks titled Irrigation and Water Resources Engineering, Fluid Flow in Pipes and Channels and Elementary Irrigation Engineering besides a laboratory manual Laboratory Work in Hydraulic Engineering for undergraduates.

The Professor of Civil Engineering and Dean (Administration) of GLA University in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, obtained his B.E.(Civil) from University of Jodhpur in 1967, M.E. (Hydrology Structures) at BITS, Pilani, in 1969, and Ph.D. from University of Roorkee in 1983.

Dr. Asawa joined the University of Roorkee (IIT Roorkee since September 21, 2001) in September 1971 where he served until his retirement on September 30, 2010. He has published 70 research papers in national and foreign journals and conferences, and has authored six books and completed more than 50 major research and consultancy projects. He has also visited several European, African and Asian countries for academic assignments. He has been a member of several professional societies and national committees, including ISO/BIS committees, for more than a decade and led the Indian delegation for the ISO/TC 113 meetings in 1994. Lately, he was member of the MOWR-constituted committee for identification of priority areas for research in the field of water resources on ‘Promoting PPP in R&D and Clean Energy’ under the PM’s Council on Trade and Industry.

The contributions made by Dr. Asawa in the broad field of water resources engineering primarily include aspects related to hydraulic structures and fluid mechanics.

In view of the considerable empiricism existing in the design of hydraulic structures, in spite of the strides made in different branches of fluid mechanics, some studies were undertaken with the objective of rationalising the analysis and design of some hydraulic structures that are commonly used in our country. These investigations resulted in comprehensive discharge relations (which include the identifiable effects of viscosity and surface tension) for thin-plate and broad-crested weirs of different shapes, and rational methods for the design of spillway bucket and spillway aerators.

Some studies dealing with basic fluid mechanics include displacement effect on Pitot tube measurements, characteristics of radial turbulent boundary layer, turbulent boundary layer over rigid and flexible surfaces, developing flow, drag reduction on account of flexible surfaces, and blockage effect in channel flow past smooth circular cylinders to gather information on afflux, energy loss, and drag force.

In addition, Dr. G.L. Asawa had also been actively involved in the research and consultancy work in the area of wind engineering at IIT Roorkee.
