The Rolep hydroelectric project received a big boost when the Expert Appraisal Committee for River Valley and Hydroelectric projects recommended scoping clearance for the project. 72 MW capacity project in Sikkim is a run-of-river scheme which envisage construction of a 45 m high concrete gravity dam across the Rangpo river in East Sikkim District. The project is being implemented by Velankani Renewable Energy Pvt. Ltd.
The Rolep hydroelectric project was originally mooted in 2001 and the project had received environment clearance in 2004. As per the original plans, the project was to be implemented by Sikkim Power Development Corporation and project envisaged the setting up of 36 MW hydro power project at an estimated cost of Rs. 200 crore. However, the project was scrapped in 2008 by the Sikkim government due to delay in execution of the project.
