MRPL Refinery

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) has announced its decision to shelve its planned refinery expansion and focus on increasing its presence in the petrochemicals sector. The company’s refinery is located at Mangaluru in Karnataka.

In December 2022, MRPL had announced its plans to expand its refinery capacity from 16.6 million tpa to 18.2 million tpa at Mangalore in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. The Rs 11,000 crore project was to cover over 1,050 acres of land. Earlier, it wanted to expand the refinery capacity to 25 million tpa.

Keeping in mind the future demand scenario for petroleum products, MRPL has decided to focus on petrochemicals which will have readymade demand from industries like Plastics and Paints. The new plant is expected to be located in Karnataka and is expected to be operational in the next three to five years.

MPRL is also setting up a ligno-cellulosic ethanol production plant to produce 60,000 kilo litres per day of 2G ethanol using domestic agro based ligno cellulosic feedstock at Harihara in Davangere district of Karnataka. The project is expected to cost Rs 1,371.60 crore.
