Last week, Korean vehicle manufacturer Hyundai Rotem placed a major order with Voith for the extension of the metro in Delhi. The German specialist in intelligent drive solutions will deliver hundreds of couplers and gear units for the 81 vehicles of Line 10 of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. These will be manufactured in India, at the Voith location in Hyderabad, and delivered from 2015 to 2018.

Hyundai Rotem, which, last year, secured the 1 trillion Korean won contract for the supply of 636 cars for phase-III extension of Delhi Metro, claimed that it had the largest market share in the Indian metro rail market surpassing the big three—Bombardier of Canada, Alstom of France and Siemens of Germany. Hyundai-Rotem also recently delivered the first rail coach for the 72-km elevated Hyderabad Metro project as part of a large order that L&T Hyderabad Metro Rail placed on the consortium.

Voith Turbo_Metro Rail_ProjectsMonitorIn coming months and years, the metro rail transportation sector in India will see increasing competition as multinational companies vie for lucrative contracts and subcontracts to metro projects across the country. As many as eight projects are currently underway in Delhi and NCR, Karnataka, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Punjab and the union territory of Chandigarh have approached the central government for financial assistance to set up metro rail. Besides, Maharashtra is keen to develop metro projects in Nagpur and Pune.

The momentum in Indian metro rail is expected to pick up after the ongoing general elections and particularly after the formation of a new government that is likely to galvanise the infrastructure sector which is lagging in many areas.

“There is a good outlook for the Indian subway (metro) market,” a spokesperson for Hyundai Rotem said.

Hyundai Rotem is leveraging its world-class quality and technology to win metro projects in emerging markets like India that promise high business growth. As the spokesperson noted, “There is a great potential of expanding the new business market if we elevate the quality and technology level and generate an incredible level of synergy using the brand awareness of Hyundai and Kia Motors.”

The transportation companies are investing big money in India’s metro rail sector. Last month, Alstom, a global leader in power generation, power transmission and rail infrastructure, delivered the first two metro sets of Chennai Metro to Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. The stainless steel train sets were the first-ever to be manufactured in India, at Alstom’s new rolling stock facility in Sricity, Andhra Pradesh. They are part of a €243-million order representing 42 Metropolis train sets to be delivered by 2015.

The French player, a major contender for metro and rail infrastructure projects in the country, invested crores of rupees in its 280,000 sq. ft Sricity facility. The modern factory has an energy-efficient design including double insulation, heat recovery systems, a geothermal heating and cooling system which consumes less energy and is equipped to recycle rainwater.

“The new world-class Sricity plant plays a vital role in Alstom’s strategy to set up a local industrial footprint in India, enhance proximity to its local customers and serve the expanding Indian infrastructure market,” Henri Poupart-Lafarge, President, Alstom Transport, said. “Metro projects are currently being implemented in seven Indian cities, representing a network of over 450 km. By 2030, 40 per cent of people will live in towns and cities (vs. 30 per cent today). This new facility places Alstom in an excellent position to seize the opportunities offered by the country’s rapid urbanisation.”

Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation is not new to the metro rail market having won several major rail and metro contracts including from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, one of which was as recently as September 2013, for providing the first driverless unattended mass transit solution in India. The globally-proven communications-based train control solution will be delivered to Line 7, a part of the metro’s expansion plan. The contract is valued at approximately Rs.3.9 billion ($62 million). In fact, Bombardier is DMRC’s largest contractor for signalling and train control solutions.

“This is another important new contract with our valued customer Delhi Metro, supporting their expansion of the network. Following our successful partnership on the upgrades of Lines 5 and 6, we are very much looking forward to working together to introduce our latest and most advanced mass transit technology to the city, and continue our long-term partnership to improve the transportation options in the city,” Peter Cedervall, President – Rail Control Solutions, Bombardier Transportation, said at the time.

The global transportation companies are also luring Indian metro rail developers with their cutting-edge technology.

Last November, Siemens Infrastructure & Cities Sector delivered the core rail systems of the rapid metro rail project in Gurgaon, Haryana, a 6-km metro line connecting Delhi Metro. As part of the contract, Siemens equipped Rapid Metro Rail Gurgaon with aluminum body trains, modern train control system, 750V DC traction power supply along with a third-rail system for current collection.

“The technology from Siemens is safe, reliable, and efficient, and the test runs were completed without any glitches. We are extremely pleased with the partnership as it is our mutual goal to provide state-of-the-art infrastructure solutions to India,” said Sanjiv Rai, CEO and Managing Director, Rapid Metro Rail Gurgaon Ltd.

Tilak Raj Seth, Executive Vice-President and Country Sector Lead – Infrastructure and Cities, Siemens Ltd, added, “Rapid Metro Rail is a landmark public transportation project and has given us an opportunity to prove our prowess as technology partner to provide state-of-the-art transportation solutions on turnkey basis.”

With India’s urban population likely to grow from 400 million in 2011 to over 600 million by 2030, there will be a greater demand for quality and sophisticated transport solutions like metro rail and monorail, and this will ensure tremendous growth prospects for global transport infrastructure companies, at least for the next two decades.
